Prerequisites

Here at Inspirit Innovators, we believe there should be no hurdles to learning AI.

That’s why we have no formal prerequisites for our AI Program in Interdisciplinary Science. However, previous exposure to coding and data science is a plus.

How did the Inspirit Program affect your career journey?

“I worked on the Siri project at Inspirit. It was significant to me because all my previous AI projects involved working with images, which meant this text-based project gave me a new insight on just how many places AI can be applied.”

Brandon Z.University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign / Siri Project

“The summer program was a great experience... I enjoyed dwelling on ethical questions and learning about applications of AI directly from people working to create them.”

Ananya G.Princeton University / Fake News Detection Project

“I collaborated on an AI project focused on social justice ... The program enhanced my interest in pursuing a degree in Computer Science during my freshman year at Stanford.”

Kalissa G.Stanford University / Criminal Justice Project

Meet Akshay:

An Inspirit Instructor Designing AI for Psychology

How did you choose what you studied in college? How did you end up studying AI?

“After having taken computer science courses in high school, I came into college really excited about the power of computational techniques as a framework for problem-solving. However, it was only after taking my first course in cognitive neuroscience that I realized the potential to use these techniques help us answer one of the most fundamental mysteries of nature: the question of how the brain gives rise to intelligence.”

What research/industry work within AI have you focused on?

Akshay Jagadeesh has a PhD from Stanford, working in the field of computational neuroscience, where he draws on techniques from artificial intelligence to model and simulate the function of the human brain. In particular, his research seeks to characterize the computations that the brain performs in order to give rise to visual perception and complex natural behaviors.

The field has discovered a lot about the correspondences between modern computer vision algorithms and the human visual system, but Akshay is particularly excited about understanding the ways in which the human brain outperforms state-of-the-art AI algorithms. He believes this understanding will help in developing more sophisticated human-like intelligent algorithms.
